Some updates on tennis happenings

Under the seasoned leadership of veteran tennis professional Spike Gonzales, USTA Junior Team Tennis returned to the Collier County Parks and Recreation landscape on Saturday, Oct. 24. There was a Kickoff Party on that date, a six-week schedule of team matches posted, and finale awards parties will be held on the weekend of Dec. 12. Junior Team Tennis will have two categories: 10-and-over (for intermediate and advanced players) and 12-and-under (for novice and advanced beginner players). Players must be able to get serves into play and keep score. Novice players will play with “green-dot” tennis balls, allowing for slower and lower bounces. Experienced players will use standard tennis balls. Teams will be organized to ensure team parity and competitive match play for all participants. Matches for the 12-and-under are projected for early Friday evenings, with the over-10s on early Saturday evenings. Most matches will be played at Vineyards Community Park. Rainouts will be rescheduled on Sunday evenings. The $50 registration fee ($60 for non-USTA members) covers all costs of administration, balls, pro supervision of matches, awards and two parties. Registrations must be in by Oct. 22. For more information and to obtain a registration form, contact Gonzales at 248-0894.
